The Rise and Fall of Franche Hall

Front cover of "The Rise and Fall of Franche Hall"

Kidderminster has lost too many of its finest buildings, including Franche Hall, which should have been the jewel at the heart of modern Franche. Dating back to 1861 at least, it was left in perfect condition by the carpet manufacturer Michael Tomkinson, who died in 1921. Three years later it was ransacked for building materials and pulled down.

Nigel Gilbert tells the story of the house and its occupants, and asks whether the loss of such houses was necessary.

Published in 1999, “The Rise and Fall of Franche Hall” is now out of print.
